July 2011 Updates

I just wanted to give a quick update as the month of July comes to a close. 

I am trying out Google+ and I like it so far.  The circles concept is what I have thought was missing from Facebook which caused me to not use it very much.  If you would like a Google+ invite, just hit me up in the comments section.

This morning, I'm eating 3 Pederson's Farms breakfast sausage links with 3 Vital Farms eggs scrambled with a little Heini's cheddar cheese after a good morning body-weight workout. My plans for the rest of the morning are to catch up on some blog reading then get caught up on any mail/bills.

I am excited about my attempt at observing my own version of Ramadan next month. For the month of August, I will fast during the daylight hours. As this is my first attempt, I do not want to make it too extreme, so I will allow myself water during daylight hours, which is prohibited under strict observance of Ramadan.

I want to do this for spiritual reasons, not religious reasons. So, I will not be taking on Islamic religious ideas like not eating pork or reading a section of the Qur'an each night. Those are religious things. I want to experience the spiritual things like practicing my patience with others and self-control, appreciating what you have and lessening the desire for what you do not have, expressing true love, charity and good-will towards others in need when you have surplus, etc. There are many spiritual things that one can take from observing this religion-based practice that are not specifically Islamic, and I want to experience those things to see if I can grow from those experiences and gain more understanding and sympathy for others.

I may not refer to my Ramadan observance in each day's post during the month of August, but, if you are following my posts, then you will know that this will be going on all month and will most likely have an influence on my posts during this time period.

I have today and tomorrow to "get prepared", so wish me luck! Or not..tempt me and challenge my to maintain my dedication to this task. Either support or assaults will both be accepted with gratitude.

I am still evaluating the features of Google+ and will be making posts in both locations while I make my decision on which location I think works best for my purposes.

I have strayed from optimal eating and physical activity over the past couple of months and my body is definitely expressing it's incompatibility with the way I have been treating it.  I am going to do my best to use this month of Ramadan observance to reset my mind, body, and soul back into the state of harmony and union that they were in earlier this year.  This will be an awesome birthday present to myself if I can regain my previous state then continue the positive progress to excel beyond my previous best to achieve new heights.

As I always say, I cannot promise to post more often, but I am going to try.  I just do not want to post something every day solely for the purpose of maintaining a regular schedule of posts.  I only want to post quality information that I believe is worth your time to read.  So, with that said, I'll be back when I feel I have something worth saying.

Friday Morning Food for Thought

Good Friday morning to everyone!

If you have not heard of Paul Chek, then you are in for a treat today.  The first time I heard anything about Paul Chek was back when I was all into Underground Wellness and I watched all of hisvideo blogs and listened to every radio show that Sean made.  He was always singing praises of Paul Chek and his book "How to Eat, Move, and Be Healthy".  After listening to a radio show with Paul as the guest, I knew this was an intelligent and good-hearted man who is extremely passionate about helping others to find the true root of their problems and teaching them how to heal themselves.

I listen closely to what he says and meditate with his thoughts to assimilate them into my own life.  I will warn you that he can seem a little wacko/crazy/not-right-in-the-head at times in his presentation methods and general personality.  Anyone who is truly intelligent, sincere, and passionate about the message they are trying to get across can be taken that way by people who are not used to experiencing true passion.

Last night I read a 4-part series on his blog at Paul Check's Blog.  I cannot suggest with enough enthusiasm that you should read this series.  I believe that this is highly valuable and incredibly useful information that he has offered up for free.  The four-part series is linked below:

Lucky 7's

Today is 2011-07-07.  I know that numbers in dates do not really mean anything, and it may sound like a gimmick, but I'm taking today as a lucky day to start a new experiment.  Starting today and to continue until my birthday, Sept 29th, I will be trying a couple of new things out.

Since I just picked a random day to start because I liked the numbers in it and chose my birth date day as an end date, no special numbers should come out of that, right?  Well, for those of you like me that like numbers, 84 days may sound random, but it just happens to be exactly 2 months and 22 days or 12 weeks.  So no matter how much I try to ignore interesting number combinations, they always sneak back in.  Moving on...


New Experimental Tasks:
  1. Maintain a diet that follows the Primal Blueprint.
  2. Maintain a physical activity routine that follows the Primal Blueprint.
  3. Put in no more than 40 hours per week in the office.
  4. Keep Sunday as family, friends, and personal recovery day.
  5. Donate at least 1 hour per week as a mentor.
  6. Find a mentor to spend at least 1 hour per week with.
  7. Participate in at least one volunteer activity per month.

I will be posting updates on this experiment including both successes and failures.  I have just now joined StudentMentor.org in a first attempt at meeting requirements 5 and 6.  I will update here on how that goes.

I am honestly having the same difficulty with 7 as I have had in the past.  I do not mean to sound cynical, but all of the "volunteer" opportunities that I can find are either a real part-time job that someone just does not want to pay someone to do or the volunteer opportunity is too closely-tied to a religious organization where part of the volunteer activity is to spread their religious beliefs.

If anyone reads this and has any suggestion, please send them because I am at a loss here.

The Times They Are a-Changin'

I am writing this on Monday, May 23, 2011.  Today I am trying to get back into blogging....again.

It seems that I am having trouble making a habit out of this.  Actually, I never intended on it to be a habit, but I did think that I would be using it more than I have.  So, I am going to try again to share my thoughts and experiences on here.

I have been catching up on a lot of reading recently.  One of the blogs that I follow talks about minimalism.  I went into my Facebook account and deleted any "friend" that did not pass my theoretical friend test.  For each person, I asked myself this question "If this person was to receive an urgent message from me in need of help, would they immediately come to my aid?".

This resulted in me removing ex-girlfriends that I no longer communicate with, old school classmates and acquaintances that I no longer keep up with, and people that I met at some event but never ran into again at other similar events.  My Facebook friends count is now 27 and I am very happy with that number.  I am honored to know 27 people that I would consider a true real friend.  I have "un-followed"  most of the people I had followed on my Twitter account.  Remaining are 7 very solid resources that I want to read everything from so I will no longer have to browse the Twitter feed for something I actually want to check out.  My next step is to clean out my Facebook photo albums.  I want to fine a single place to store my photos for online backup and sharing purposes.  My first thought is to use Picasa by Google.  I will give this a try and report on my findings.

My email has all been centralized to gmail, so I am happy with consolidation of email accounts.  I only have one phone number, which is my mobile, so I am happy with that.  Email communication, check...phone communication, check.

I switched from Wells Fargo to Chase about 2 years ago and I have been happy with Chase so far.  I have one username that can see my personal checking, personal savings, personal credit card, business checking, and business credit card.  That is extremely helpful.  I have 2 other credit cards that I keep open to help my credit score.  One is only used for gasoline.  The other is only used for food.  This helps keep 2 open credit card accounts in low use of available credit and also helps in tracking expenses by category.  These 2 additional credit cards do require 2 more sets of un/pw to remember, but I must keep one open since it has over 10 years of positive credit history. 

I am thinking of closing out the other additional card, but that would increase my credit utilization ratio, so I am still trying to decide the best option on it.  I want to think that keeping the old card and moving activity from the other non-Chase card to my chase card would make things better by reducing the number of un/pw combinations to remember, but that would be closing out an older, higher limit card for a newer, lower limit card, which could shorten the average life and increase the utilization ratio. 

Do I trade what should be better on calculating my credit score for what should make my life a little more minimalistic?  It is a difficult question that I have not yet determined the answer to...if there is one...

So, I have taken the minimalist's cleaver to my Facebook friends list, my Google reader subscription list, my Twitter follows, and my financial institutions and accounts.  Everything is in either Dropbox or Evernote now, no more Google Docs.  I see the use for Google Docs, but my primary need is file synchronization across multiple devices and Dropbox is the best solution I have found.  Evernote is perfect for taking a small clipping to save for future review or reference.  Together, these 2 solve all of my digital document storage/access needs.

Going forward from today, I will be using both my Twitter and Facebook accounts for updates.  I use TweetDeck, so I can make one update be broadcasted to both services.  So, whether you are a friend on Facebook, or a follower on Twitter, you will be getting all of my updates.  If you want to follow me on Twitter, my handle is @RichMcCollum

Osama bin Laden

With the news of Osama bin Laden's death today, I wanted to say a couple of things.

First of all, I want to give my respect to the man.  I know many will not understand this, but I have to believe that this man honestly followed what he believed to be the Truth.  It may not align with our beliefs, but he did PASSIONATELY follow what he believed.  Do we follow our beliefs with the same passion?

From all of the evidence that I have seen, I must conclude that Osama bin Laden was not a hypocrite who preached one set of rules, but lived by another.  You may choose to hate him because you label his actions as evil, but you have to respect him for his giving of his everything for his beliefs.  The man fought for the religion that he was raised in and taught to believe as the one and only real Truth by his parents.

On another note, as we gripe about how many bad decisions are made by our government officials, I must give them a thumbs up on the burial at sea.  I understand that no country was prepared to take him for burial in such a short notice, but I see another reason that burial at sea is actually preferred, in my opinion.  One news article stated "Another concern expressed by U.S. officials was that bin Laden's grave site would become a shrine -- a practice Campo said bin Laden detested but nevertheless likely would have occurred."  This article actually used the word "prudent" to describe the decision and I would agree.  He was our #1 enemy, but we still did our best to respect his wishes around the proper burial rites of his religion and specific personal wishes of his grave site not becoming a shrine.  I applaud or military service men and women for maintaining the honor of a true warrior.

This is a major event that will be added to our collective history books today.  We will all remember where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news.  Many are celebrating this day.  Some must be mourning this day.  Many feel closure, but how may think things have only just now begun?  The obvious question is "What now?"  What Now? Lemme tell you what now...

What do you think?  What now?  Where do we go from here?  Is al Qaeda any lesser of a threat now that bin Laden is dead?  Are they more of a threat?

Progress Update: 2001-04-03

The first quarter of 2011 is over. Yes, time flies. How have you been doing on new years resolutions? Mark Sisson recently wrote a post about checking in on your first quarter status, so in addition to this being my scheduled April update, I would also like to address some of the subjects in his post.

First, I'll summarize my current status. My current status is: All is Well. I feel better than I have in about 10 years. My mind is sharp and clear. My soul is peaceful and happy. My body is healthy and fit. My overall, general disposition is positive and I am not just simply happy with my life; I am truly thrilled with my current life and I am excited about all of the potential paths that lay in front of me to choose from for my future.


Clothing Sizes:

With the return of warm weather, I had to get out my shorts the other day when we had high's in the 80's. I have not worn any of them since last summer and, as expected, they all fit looser. The pairs that fit comfortably loose last year don't fit at all now. The pairs that were borderline too tight last summer fit between just right and a little loose now. I've been anxious for the season change because the pairs pants that purchased last fall are slowly but consistently becoming looser and have went from just a little loose to at least a full size or two too large to the point that I have to do the belt-cinching thing and that doesn't look too hot. I'm wearing my shirt's un-tucked now for a completely different reason than before.

I was hoping to make it to summer so that I only needed to buy new shorts and can wait out the new pants purchases until this fall when I should be settled into a waist-size that doesn't continue to shrink. Of course different cuts and styles fit differently, but in general I have dropped form wearing 34 inch waist pant to 32's.

For another positive note, I am Medium again. When I went to get some new workout pants a month ago, it was so nice for the waist of mediums to fit right. The larges are too long in the legs for me resulting in having to roll up the bottoms or have them taken up. At 5' 7" I find it much easier to find proper-fitting pants in length now that I can fit my waist into the mediums. Jeans are not that difficult because they make them in different waist and length combinations, however things like motorcycle leather suits, workout clothes, sporting equipment and such sometimes are only made in limited sizes of S/M/L/XL/etc.


Nutrition:

I liked all of the recent articles I've read talking about concept of "Paleo 2.0" from those that I read.  I agree that it can get ridiculous when you take your food selection criteria basis so extreme as to become dogmatic.  That is getting away from the spirit of what all of this is about.  I generally eat in a LeanGains style IF pattern with my evening meal being the largest and I do my best to not consume refined sugar, wheat, and industrial-age vegetable oils.   A new hash tag that Sean Croxton is using on Twitter is #JERF, which stands for Just Eat Real Food.  I like its simplicity and this is basically the point that I have come too as well.

No more caffe mochas every morning now, but I am beginning to enjoy a good Americano with heavy cream and a little cinnamon.  I have given into the occasional urge for ice cream a couple of times, but I no longer crave cookies, brownies, or cakes.  It seams that the combo of flour and sugar bothers me much more than fat and sugar so ice cream get a pass every once in a while.  Pies still have a little siren song left in them.  Nobody can deny the amazing combination that is warm pecan pie with vanilla ice cream on top.  I know that it is not healthy to consume deserts on a regular basis, but I think a once per week treat just makes life much more enjoyable than complete abstinence.

My favorite meals recently have been:
  • Steak medium-rare with steamed broccoli and carrots
  • Half of a Rotisserie chicken and a baked sweet potato with butter and cinnamon
  • Grilled Pork Chop stuffed with smoked Gouda cheese and bacon with baked slices of sweet potato
  • Chipotle: 2 steak tacos with pintos and hot sauce and 2 carnitas tacos with black beans and hot sauce all on soft corn tortillas
  • Home-made chili
  • Steak and chicken combo fajitas
I recently went to a new place near my house that just opened.  The Braza Dancante is a Brazilian-style churrascaria.  If you have never been to a churrascaria, I highly recommend it.  All of the different meats were cooked perfectly and it was a wonderful dining experience.

Analysis:

All numbers seem to be going in positive directions except for the lipid panel test results.  I have been listening to many different opinions on lipid panel tests and interpretation of resits, so I will keep a watch on these numbers at the next test in 3 months, but for now they do not concern me that much.  I feel healthier than I have in years and I think that counts for much more influence on perception of my current health than one single test result which some experts argue is not really a valid test for what it is used to measure.

Additional Info:

I didn't get around to taking photos at the time this was written and I am just now, a month later, getting this update posted.  Currently, I am I little leaner that the last photos, but there has not been significant visual changes so I have chosen to delay photos until next month.

As of today, May 1st, 2011, I am still following the same general nutrition and workout rules and I still feel great.  One of the things that I am wanting to convey by tracking my progress as I am is that I am not undertaking any extreme lose X pound in Y days plan.  I am just eating real food that our ancestors would recognize and avoiding things created by people in the last couple of generations that are created in factories instead of by nature.  I only workout about twice per week.  These are very intense workouts, but only consist of 15-min warm-up, 30-min intense, then 15-min cool-down.  On other days I do get some kind of physical activity in, but more in a style of casual play than intense workout.

I will get more blood work done in a month on 2011-06-01 for a mid-year report.  I will also post updated photos at that time.

That Paleo Guy: Are Carbs the Enemy?

Great post, Jamie!  I would like to share my thoughts.

There is one word that everyone seems to dance around because they are scared to use it: Addict.

If you have an alcoholic drink first thing in the morning, another mid-morning, another for lunch, another mid-afternoon, then several at night, and have to keep this schedule up to maintain the chemical state that alcohol puts your body into without beginning to experience withdrawal systems, everyone would would agree that you are an alcohol addict.

The same goes for any substance (read as 'drug') that significantly alters your body's chemical balance away from homeostasis.  No one is afraid to use the word addict with those substances, because "drugs are bad", but everyone seems to be scared to use it with carbohydrates, because carbohydrates are chocolate chip cookies, fudge sundaes, pasta, and garlic bread.

I'm not scared.  People eating high-carbohydrate diets are carbohydrate addicts in denial.  I have been an addict before so I know exactly what I an talking about.

When they say a low-carb diet is "hard to stick to", I see that no different as an alcoholic saying a low alcohol lifestyle is hard to stick to.  Yes, because you are addicted to how it makes you feel but it's effects wear off quickly so you must re-dose often and you develop a tolerance over time, so you slowly increase the amount of each dose.  I think the term "downward spiral " applies very well to this situation.

I'm not scared and I'm calling everyone out.  You are all CARBOHYDRATE ADDICTS who let the carbohydrates take control of your life away from you.  I know this is true because I am an former carbohydrate addict myself.  I just did not realize it until I was free from the roller-coaster ride that is that lifestyle.

AND...when everyone around you is that way, then is MUST be normal, right?  If I am a carbohydrate addict then everyone around me is also, so that can't be true. Or is it?

Mid-Month Update for March

I just wanted to post up a quick mid-month update for March.

I am currently still happy with my decision to move my gym membership from Life Time Fitness to the Zoo Health Club. The Zoo gym has all of the resources that I need from a local gym without paying for additional features that I do not use. I have decided to switch weeks between home gym workouts and Zoo gym workouts. Switching up gym location each week has helped to prevent boredom/adaptation.

I stuck to my nutrition rules on 5th/6th weekend but I slipped in a Snickers Ice Cream bar and a pint of Ben & Jerry's ice cream on Sunday the 13th. The Snicker's was fucking delicious and the B&J was skrumptdidduliumptious! No regrets. I had one (ok...2) slip(s), but I am owning that decision made at that time and moving forward. Honestly, sticking to "the program" as strictly as I have been for several months now is so completely different than how I have ate for the majority of my life that I would consider one ice cream treat per month as an allowable "cheat" and not something that is going to send me to an early grave. Yes, it is definitely not Paleo nor Primal and would be highly discouraged in most nutritional guides, but I have to allow for one treat per month in my personal diet rulebook to maintain sanity. Limiting = Can Live With, but Not Allowed = Drive Rich Crazy. Those that follow Martin already know of his Cheesecake Mastery skills. One of my nicknames in college was Cookie after the Cookie Monster because of my go-to munchie item being any form of cookie. So, the legend of Cookie continues...

This month I started only weighing myself once per week on Saturday mornings. My weekly weights have been as follows: 2011-03-05@ 167.2 lbs and 2011-03-12 @ 166.8 lbs. According to the scales calculations via bio-impedance, my body fat has dropped slightly and muscle mass has increased slightly. According to my HowMyClothesFit meter and my HowILookInTheMirror scale, I see slight to moderate improvement in comparable historic metrics.

Progress Update: 2011-03-01

First update, I fell off the bandwagon on everything! Just kidding, but I did have some strays off course.

Adherence to plan and adjustments:

Around the beginning of February, I had some problems staying away from a few things like Pizza and Ben & Jerry's. I didn't go completely crazy, but I did fall victim to the temptations a couple of times. This did not result in any significant fat gain, but it did stall any fat loss for a few weeks. So, basically, by Feb 15th I was still at about the same status as Jan 15th without any measurable changes.

Other than the few nutritional strays, I have stuck to my plan pretty well. Starting Monday Feb 28 I will be switching things up a bit. The 8/16 fast every weekday was a bit tiring on me, so I am going to decrease that to M/W/F. I will have a breakfast of eggs and some meat on Tuesday and Thursdays. I will be keeping Saturday and Sunday the same except that I will be limiting Saturday to only one feast/re-feed meal and eat more paleo for the rest of the day.

I have changed my gym membership from Life Time Fitness to Zoo Gym. Life Time is nice, but it's just more than I need and can be way too crowded at many hours. I am really diggin the equipment at the Zoo Gym and the location is better for me. I will be doing strength/resistance training on M/W/F with pushing on Monday, Pulling on Tuesday, and Balance/Flexibility/Stabilization on Fridays. Tuesday and Thursday will be some sort of interval training style workout. Saturday is for play and Sunday is for rest.

Progress Update - 01/03/2011

Introduction

Today's post is the update to my previous post, Progress Information, with my current stats and comparison photos as of today, 01/03/2011.  I had blood tests performed at CVS Minute Clinic this morning at 9 am in a 12-hr fasted state.  After the blood tests, I had a light breakfast of eggs, bacon, swiss cheese, and water at Lifetime Fitness while reading and waiting for my fitness tests there.  I was very pleased with some of the results, but I see that I made little or no progress in others.  So with the good and bad news, I have more data and more theories to test.

Data Analysis


I will start at the top and work my way down the table. First, over the past 6 months, my total weight loss is now 25 lbs.  I know the caliper method is more accurate, so I am going by those measurements.  I just use the scale measurements for easy daily/weekly tracking of movement.  I surpassed my goal of 15% to 14.2% which makes me very proud!  Body fat percentage is one on my major goals so this result is inspiring to continue as I have been doing.


Exercise max reps have all approximately doubled.  I consider this acceptable for the amount of work that I have put in since Aug 1st.


My fasting glucose increased from 69 to 83, but 80 is optimal so I don't see any problem with this result.  HbA1C results were the same at 5.6% which is a little high, but OK.  Total cholesterol dropped from 237 to 200.  I am happy with this drop but I am not that worried about trying to lower it any further.  All other lipid panel results stayed the same and are acceptable to me.


My Max VO2 increased slightly, but I was hoping for a little more.  This is something I want to work on.  Bicep strength showed only a small increase and that surprised me.  I did not expect my sit and reach to increase very much since I have always been generally flexible and did not focus on flexibility over the past 6 months.  This test's results did not have a calculation of "Overall Fitness".  Even though my data age increased by 1 year, my BodyAge remained at 30.  I do not know exactly how calculate this, but I will take it as at east definitely not negative results.  Actual measurements from the 3 point skin-fold method were listed on the results printout this time, so I have added those fields.


So, in summary, the numbers that should be low have stayed the same or dropped and the numbers that should be high have stayed the same or increased.  I accept this as evidence of overall positive progress over the past 6 months and look forward to even better results at the end oh the next 3 months with my new methods under test.
